More than 30 homes have been destroyed in the Overberg District in the Western Cape as fires have blazed through the region.
Around 500 firefighters spent weeks battling the flames affecting Hermanus, Frankskraal and Betty’s Bay and surrounding municipalities asked residents to evacuate their homes.
Reports are emerging that the firefighters were exhausted from working day and night to put out the fires, risking their lives in the process. Concerned citizens from the Randparkridge Community issued a plea on their Facebook page for help for both the firefighters and the volunteers deployed in the region. The group asked for any assistance donors could make, in the form of food and products that could protect the firefighters from the elements, boost their energy levels and help with morale.
Cell C, through its ongoing kindness campaign, reached out to these heroes with a donation of food, hygiene and personal care products as well as energy drinks.
Lizel Jansen van Vuuren, contact at the Roodepoort North drop off centre has applauded Cell C for this kind donation.
“We are grateful to Cell C for their donation. We believe that it will assist the firefighters and volunteers who are always ready to help fight these blazing fires,” says Ms Jansen van Vuuren.
Cell C employee volunteers handed over the items at Roodepoort drop-off centre from where they were transported to the fire stations in the affected areas.
“We are proud to do our part to help the brave firefighters and volunteers who are risking their lives to help all those who have been tragically affected by the fires in the Western Cape,” says Suzette van der Merwe, managing executive of Cell C corporate social investment. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with those who have lost their homes,” she said.
