Following a horrific car crash on March 2, Cape Town singer-songwriter and guitarist, Justen Hosken, passed away on March 10. His wife, Lee-Ann Hosken was also involved in the serious accident.
Hosken, who was known for his incredible musical talent as the lead singer of Rabbit Black, was a soft-spoken and sensitive person, with a huge musical talent.
He was a final year BMus student at Stellenbosch University and was proficient on classical, acoustic and electric guitars, performing in all manner of styles and genres.
For this concert, at 7pm on Saturday June 4, several classmates, friends and lecturers from Stellenbosch University will play tribute to Justen.
Damian Christians will perform excerpts from Bolling’s Concerto for Classical Guitar and Jazz Trio alongside bassist Roxane Steffen, pianist Elna van der Merwe. Marius Otto will perform a movement from the Villa-Lobos Guitar Concerto and Brent January will perform a movement of Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez.
The Stellenbosch Guitar Quartet will also be performing works by Brouwer, Boccherini and Assad. Various classmates and alumni will be featured in the Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras no.5 by Villa-Lobos, arranged for guitar orchestra by Roland Dyens.
After the accident, Justen had to undergo major surgery, leaving huge medical bills due to hospitalisation and surgical costs. All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the Justen Hosken Memorial Fund and additional donations are welcomed.
