If one joins a local social club, one automatically becomes a member of the national organisation. The social club charges an annual membership fee to cover administration costs. The Helderberg social club meets every fourth Monday of the month in the Dutch Reformed church hall, Gordon Road, Somerset West.
Although the meeting starts at 10am, members are encouraged to come early and enjoy some fellowship over a cup of tea, coffee and biscuit at no charge. Meetings last about 90 minutes. The club usually has a speaker once a month to entertain members with a variety of subjects and this is free of charge to members. Past speakers include:
The acapella voices of the Bishop’s School Boy Choir under Stephan Carletti;
the National Sea Rescue Institute;
Ryan Stramrood, ice swimmer and motivational speaker;
Herschel Girl’s High School Fusion, under the direction of Kevin Smuts, whose beat box vocal accompaniment kept them in tune.
The Helderberg club issues a monthly e-zine newsletter giving details of the next meeting, outing and other club and SAARP information, and new members. The club also usually hosts a Christmas lunch for members at the beginning of December.
The next general meeting of the club will take place on Monday April 23, at 10am at the Dutch Reformed church hall in Gordon Road, Somerset West.
