Jodi Gawie, Gordon High School 2018 head girl and top matric pupil, is all set to start the next chapter in her education. A resident of Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, she grew up with the support and mentorship of Pearl Stryders, who has run a feeding scheme for Sir Lowry’s Pass Village school children for almost 20 years (“Pearl is always there for the children”, Bolander, September 20, 2017). Once at Gordon High, Jodi caught the attention of geography teacher, Alvino Isaacs, who mentored Jodi at Ms Stryders’ afternoon homework club. Jodi is planning to study psychology at Stellenbosch University and, once qualified, work as a counselling psychologist. She has qualified for a NSFAS bursary and has already been working to make pocket money. She is also seeking additional funding to cover the additional expenses she will have as a student living and studying in Stellenbosch.
