The inaugural four-day Cape Duo Challenge multi-discipline cycling event, aimed at 600 amateurs competing in paired teams on and off-road is set to take place from Thursday October 5 to Sunday October 8.
The first day of the race kicks off in the picturesque Slanghoek Valley at Slanghoek Wine Cellar.
It will take on the format of a tag-relay race, with one rider completing the road leg and then tagging their partner to send them off on the off-road leg.
On the second and third days of the race, riders move on to Schalk Burger and Sons’ wine estate, Welbedacht, in Wellington. Riders compete as a team, with day two dedicated to road cycling and day three to off-road. Two minute time gap penalties between riders will apply.
The fourth and final day of the race sees riders competing in the historic Paarl Winelands. Riders will make their way through the mountainous back roads of the region among surrounding wine farms and orchards.
Ground Level Projects – an organisation that targets children in drug-torn and poverty stricken areas of the Western Cape and provides them with education and life skills – will be the main beneficiary of the race.
“The Cape Duo Challenge is an opportunity for South African cyclists who are passionate about the sport to experience something truly unique and novel, and to create history in doing so,” says co-founder Pieter Joubert.
