George Claassen, former head of the postgraduate Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University, will speak at the Friends of Richard Dawkins Association (FoRDA), on Thursday January 24, at 7pm for 7.30pm, in the Rotary hall, corner of Cloetenberg and Lourensford roads, Somerset West. In his talk titled “Reflecting science through a dirty mirror: How the media get captured by celebrity culture”, he will investigate and analyse how the influence of celebrities leads to the advancement and propagation of pseudoscientific thinking in the media, where quackery is often presented as accurate news on science.
