Wandisa recently hosted the Western Cape Adoption Coalition at its Somerset West offices, where they were joined by Lindiwe Mazibuko from the Department of Social Development.
Dr Aisling Foley’s presentation on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) was highly relevant, as many children in the Winelands are exposed to alcohol in utero.
To protect children, it is important to increase awareness about
the dangers of drinking during
pregnancy, said Debbie Wybrow of Wandisa.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that children with FASD
who are adoptable have families chosen for them who who are equip-
ped to meet their medical, therapeutic and psycho-social needs,” she
added.
“November 9 is World Adoption Day, and Wandisa honours all members of the adoption constellation. We deeply desire to see children thriving in families – within their birth families where possible, otherwise within the protection of adoptive families.
We cannot forget the multiple levels of loss and tragedy that necessitate adoption, but remain overwhelmingly grateful for how adoption protects children and adds dimension to family,” said Ms Wybrow.
