Fresh from their success at the Western Provincial Championships at the Bellville Velodrome (“HH drummies bring it home again”, Bolander, June 22), the Hottentots Holland (HH) High School drummies squad triumphed yet again at the national championships, held last week at the Herman Immelman Stadium in Germiston, Gauteng. The five-section championship event saw the 52-strong HH squad snag second place overall with the small drill squad placed first, and squad leader Schene Muller placed second in small drill and third in large drill, the only squad leader to be placed in the top three in both sections. Coach Darryl Spijkers said: “Reigning champion St Dominics (Catholic School for Girls, Boksburg) has won the national championships 27 times in the last 40 years, and we’re right up there with them. We came fourth last year, aimed for third this year, and we came in second, so we know we can take on the Saints. We’ll retain our style, but we’ve already started making plans for the Nationals in Durban in 2017. We know that the sky is the limit.”
