Henco Scholtz, a Grade 11 pupil at Strand High School, has been selected to represent South Africa at the ISA Stand up Paddle (SUP) World Championships, to be held in Wanning, Riyue Bay, China from late November to early December.
Riyue Bay will host the world’s best SUP racer, SUP surfers and paddle boarders, including for the first time ever, a SUP technical race for under-18s, in which Henco will compete.
Henco is a keen water sport athlete with a passion for the ocean, spending most of his available time in the ocean if not at school. He has always loved and lived close to the sea, and naturally started surfing at age nine, with skateboarding, kite surfing and SUP surfing and paddling soon to follow.
Henco recently won the 2018 SUP Surfing and Long distance Junior titles at the South Africa SUP Championships, which was held in Durban earlier this month.
He has represented the Cape Winelands team for surfing for a couple of years, and competed at national events for most of his sport disciplines, but making the National Junior SUP Squad is a dream come true. The tour is self-funded, and Henco is asking assistance from Helderberg companies or individuals to help him to get to China.
