This article could begin in several ways: take your pick…
One: “In the morning of my life, I shall look to the sunrise … In the moment of my life when the world is new!”
Two: “I’m going to lay down, my heavy load, down by the riverside!”
Three: “The morning is the brighter, the bells in the steeple ring. And the Sun says hello to the Morning, because I sing!”
Each would be perfect – in their own way. And important.
Because here we are, at the end of January already. Just the other day we woke to the year 2021.
And now the Moon has already rotated around the Earth once – which takes about 29.5 days.
So all those plans, all those sworn promises and New Year’s resolutions: Have they been lived, in the first 8.75% of the year, now almost passed?
Yes? No? Give yourself a success score?
Here was my New Year’s resolution:
Anno 2020 was a tough year. But I’ve zero desire to dwell on that.
2021 will require, I believe, extremely high levels of one resource above all else: peace/emotional health.
These snapshots from my office show some of “My Six Commitments to Myself in 2021”.
1: “The quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight.” – Mary Sarton
2: Discipline is Freedom. (Including “The 4am Club” – Robin Sharma’s famous The 5am Club – minus one hour!)
3: Make peace with contradiction. Or: “You have to learn to dance with the fire” – as told to me by Dr Bernard Brom in the year 2000.
4: Practice Servant Leadership – including by process leadership. (Google murray williams Servant leadership.)
5: Practice Integrative Health. (Google murray williams green man.)
6: Play, Play, Play. (See Boo & My “One Million Adventures”, as recorded on Facebook, from 2014 …)
Let’s Astonish Them!
So, now to rate my performance … it’s time for that tough conversation!
But this is what I see around me:
Nature reserves are full.
The roads are full.
The outdoors are rocking!
I’ve never seen as many committed people demanding to be healthy.
Demanding that of THEMSELVES: No more!
A switch has been flicked – a massive public lightbulb moment:
Under attack from a global disease pandemic, the number one arrow we have in our quiver:
Is our health.
All six of my New Year’s resolutions are designed to be put into action:
Every single day.
