Gallery University Stellenbosch (GUS) celebrates spring with a number of free cultural events, ranging from music, to poetry and open lectures.
Today, Wednesday September 6 at 6pm, Janet Topp Fargion of the British Library and Archive will present “Taking the archive out: Integrating archive holdings in a fragmented digital world”.
Music and musical knowledge are accessed in diverse ways, including private recording collections- either physical or digital – online repositories such as Soundcloud and YouTube. Institutional sound archives frequently hold additional materials that are often more historic and rare, yet are not easily integrated into day to day listening experiences.
Within such a fragmented digital environment how does the archive build bridges between institutional sound archives and community archiving processes?
On Wednesday September 13 at 5pm, Katleho Kano Shoro will launch Sururubele – Book of poems. This free public event will feature reading of selected poems, a conversation with Dr. Uhuru Phalafala of the Stellenbosch University (SU) English department, a Q&A with the author and signing of books, available for sale at R150 each.
On Tuesday September,19 at 6pm, local pianist Kyle Shepherd will take part in IfPOP Conversations #2, the second in a series of interdisciplinary conversations on popular South African music, curated by Dr Stephanie Vos of Africa Open Institute for Music, Research and Innovation.
On Thursday September 21 at 6pm the African Rhythm band, 11 musicians who celebrate music, dance and fashion will perform live. What began as jam sessions, busking in the streets of Johannesburg and a YouTube video that went viral,became a youth band that got recognition from various media platforms. The event is the third in The Stellies Jazz Experiment series, an initiative of Gallery University Stellenbosch (GUS) – exploring the possibility of turning the white cube into a multi-disciplinary social hub – with pop-up live music happenings. In addition to live performances, the musicians engage in an open conversation with the audience. This free event was made possible by Alliance Française Stellenbosch.
