Fire season ends

Cape Winelands fire chief, Danie Wilds, receiving a memento of a flood relief trip to the Chimanimani Moutains in eastern Zimbabwe, from Cape Winelands Fire Protection Agency manager, Dale Nortje. The memento was handed over on behalf of Mark Jackson, owner of Leading Edge Aviation, in gratitude for Mr Wilds releasing Mr Jackson and his team from their local contractual obligations, so that they could participate in the relief effort.

It was all smiles at Vredenheim Wildlife and Winery outside Stellenbosch, where Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) hosted an end of fire season feedback session and lunch on Friday May 24. The event was attended by fire services from around the Boland, including Stellenbosch Fire and Rescue, Cape Winelands District Fire and Rescue and Drakenstein Fire and Rescue. Contract crews Stem in die Bos, NCC Environmental Services and Limitless Fire also attended, as did Volunteer Wildfire Services and the Drakenstein Farm Watch volunteer firefighting unit. In her keynote address, CWDM executive Mayor, Dr Elna von Schlicht paid tribute to all of the firefighters for their dedication and bravery in fighting the wildland fires that raged in a number of areas during the fire season.
