Parel Vallei (PV) High School pupils recently staged 10 performances of the musical, Fiddler on the Roof.
More than 100 pupils took part in the staging of the production, which included a full orchestra of 18 members.
The show also gave an opportunity to pupils who chose to work off-stage as sound and stage managers, hair and make-up artists, and prop managers in a professional theatre setting, as the musical was performed at the Playhouse Theatre in Somerset West.
Under the guidance of Darryl Spijkers, head of PV’s drama department, and his team, many pupils had the opportunity to use and realise their talents.
The cast was selected early in October last year, and rehearsals started immediately.
The whole cast soon climbed into the shoes of townsfolk living in a small Jewish village in Tsarist Russia, and learned of the life of Tevye, played by Griffin Poole (Grade 10), a poor milkman with five daughters with the same worries and problems that so many people face today.
The musical – and music – was difficult and challenging, but was well received by audiences, which included grandparents, parents, young children, and members of the community.
Parel Vallei High School acknowledged all parents, members of the community, Playhouse volunteers, teachers and pupils who contributed towards the success of the production.
