Rachael Colenso will be U3A Helderberg’s guest speaker on Wednesday August 2, at the Strand Town Hall, at 10am. Her presentation is “In a High and Desperate Place”, which is also the title of a book she has written.
Rachel is an international climber and explorer, who was one of four women in the world to undergo the rigorous British SAS special forces selection process. She is a professional speaker who is regularly booked for corporate conferences and charity events across Europe, and inspires audiences from all walks of life to reach higher and excel beyond their expectations. She is South Africa’s first fully-qualified mountain guide, and when not speaking at events, can be found dangling herself and her clients off the end of a rope on sheer cliff faces.
Rachel’s talk will focus on an extreme survival story, where she and her climbing partner were caught in a blizzard on a frozen cliff face high up in the Swiss Italian Alps. The events of her survival made international headlines, and were eventually captured in film for the hit TV series I Shouldn’t Be Alive. The episode has been given the status of one of greats in the series. Rachel’s talk blends animated and vivid story telling with thought-provoking life lessons. The doors open at 9.30am, when tea and coffee will be available. Guests are welcome to attend, at R20 entry. For more information, call Brodwyn at 083 604 0784.
