Daniel von der Heyden, a pupil at Somerset College Junior School, won gold and silver at the National Athletics Championships in Potchefstroom last week. He received gold for the 4x100m relay, and silver for the long jump, with a jump of 4.57m, narrowly behind the winning jump of 4.61m. Team Western Cape got the second highest medal tally overall, with 77 medals, behind Team Gauteng with 83 medals. Daniel was able to raise sufficient funds to enable his friend, Jonathan Kitanga, from Bosmansdm Primary School, to also compete at the Nationals. Jonathan and Daniel shared a room in Potchefstroom and have struck up a special friendship. Jonathan was placed eighth in the country in long jump, with his jump of 4.28m.
