Dr Bryony May, of Somerset West tackled a 109km “cycle4change” on Sunday May 5, to raise much-needed awareness around youth empowerment in South Africa.
Out the Box is a small non-profit-organisation that has run on fresh air and passion for four years, empowering, changing, educating, inspiring and providing hope in multiple vulnerable communities across a large region in greater Cape Town Area.
Bolander readers may remember it as the Soap4safety Together against Covid initiative, running soup kitchens and giving widespread support to hospitals and communities during the pandemic.
They now run multiple projects for women and youth, doing innovative education in various needs such as literacy, youth life skills, sexual health and foundation phase, to name just a few.
After four years of growth and impact, their founder, Dr May, has jumped on her bicycle to raise much-needed funds to enable them to continue the magic and impact their work has in the lives of so many.
An example is the group of illiterate youth, whose lives are being transformed through learning to read and write, opening up future possibilities and self belief.
These vulnerable youth otherwise inevitably face futures of unemployment and gangsterism.
Funds raised will also ensure that a young autistic boy, who was housebound during Covid, can continue at Mondeor Ecoschool – where he’s now a top student and thriving.
As Dr May says, every little moment and effort counts in the ripple we make. “It takes a village for our young vulnerable communities to thrive in the adversity and challenges we face in our country.
“This collaborative effort makes a difference and we see it!”
Out The Box collaborates in all projects with multiple other NPOs (for example, Masikhule, Surf4life, D4D, Darcey Sunshine and multiple local schools.
Dr May would like to thank Stefan,Tacia and the team of D4D for all their incredible support in this cycle4change fundraising initiative.
She’s also cycling in honour of the many single mums who struggle with demands of neurodiverse children, who are constantly balancing solo parenting, work and sense of purpose.
