During the City of Cape Town council meeting on Friday May 25, the title of alderman was conferred on Councillor Stuart Pringle, after 16 years of service to the City.
Mr Pringle is the only serving alderman in the Helderberg.
“Alderman” is the historical title derived from the Anglo-Saxon position of “ealdorman”, literally meaning “elder man”. Aldermen are high-ranking members of a municipal assembly or council, chosen by elected members of that council. Their selection is based on service to the community and years served on various local government bodies.
The title is conferred upon a councillor who has served on one or more local government bodies within South Africa for a period of 20 years or more; or to a councillor who has obtained a minimum of 20 points based on the point system set out in the City’s Conferment of Civic Honours Policy.
In terms of the scoring, a councillor receives one point for every year of service, and additional points for serving as a portfolio chairperson and /or sub-council chairperson.
It is conferred for life and the recipient receives a lapel badge or medal with a neck ribbon at the ceremony.
Mr Pringle has been a councillor for 16 years, and has held various council positions, which earned him a total of 33 points.
