Earth Hour 2019 is almost here, and Helderberg Eco-Rangers (in conjunction with City of Cape Town) is aiming to bring together like-minded people to celebrate planet Earth and all living creatures and plants, on Saturday March 30.
Since its onset in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for theplanet and nature.
This movement encourages people across the globe to switch off the lights for one hour, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, to symbolise their commitment.
The theme for 2019 is “Reduce, Reuse, Change the Way We Live” and the event is open to everyone.
There will be activities and talks, and visitors can take blankets and picnic baskets while the children make a lantern and have their face painted, and join in on a night-time adventure walk.
Funds raised will be used for environmental education programs and materials, and a percentage will be handed to the Mike Woods Education Centre at the Helderberg Nature Reserve.
As part of Earth Hour evening, the Eco-Rangers will be selling steel straws and other natural eco-friendly straws from Straws for Life.
Anyone who would like to support them, can get more information on the prices from Melissa at melissa@eco-rangers.co.za, and if ordered ahead of time, they will be available at the Earth Hour event.
To find out more about the time of the activities, and the various talks including “Changing our habits: living with load shedding and using less water” by Dr Wallace Vosloo – email wendy@eco-rangers.co.za or book at Quicket.
If you would like to volunteer to help with face painting and lantern making, or help direct traffic at the gate, contact Melissa or Wendy on 084 856 2736 or Whatsapp 060 855 0754.
