Each year Masikhule hosts Cast On 4 Kids on Mandela Day – encouraging our community to knit or crochet items for the young children in the many Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres they work with in marginalised communities.
This year they are asking folk to prepare blankets, scarves and beanies and to bring them to their event at Urban Voice, where they can join in for 67 minutes to knit or crochet, or just drop off their donation (the children are all between 3 months and 5 years old).
They also have a drive to fund 100 double-sided fleece blankets loving made by Khulani Creatives – an empowerment project supporting unemployed women in Alexandra.
Each blanket costs R120, so they are aiming to collect R12 000 for this (bank details are on www.masikhule.org – reference your name and blanket).
For those who would like to contribute in another way – they are also collecting gently-used picture books for toddlers, empty cereal boxes, large tea boxes and colourful plastic lids to use in their training and supply to the 70+ ECD Centres.
So join in for 67 minutes at Urban Voice Church, Schapenberg Road, any time between 11am and 2pm, on Thursday July 18.
They will collate all the donated items and distribute them to the over 2 500 young children in the ECD Centres – from Sir Lowry’s Pass through to Macassar, and even Eerste River.
