Benchmark of leadership

Johan van Zyl,
Somerset West

What a pleasant surprise to see a woman in your news section, for whom I have had the greatest respect since the day I met her way back in 1997.

Valerie Keuning was my first manager when I started out my career in 1997 at Absa Bank, and she was so supportive of my move to Johannesburg at the end of 1998.

To this day she is still my benchmark for what a true leader should be, and even after 23 years, and as a great-grandmother, she continues to set that example.

Under lockdown she continues to be a leader in her community, by knitting those colourful beanies for preemie babies and toddlers.

As a proud resident of Somerset West, I’m even prouder now that I know we have a strong lady like Valerie Keuning in the Helderberg,

I wish her well, and thank her for the privilege of having her as a career role model and leader, when I started out my career.
