I have been watching the cleaning ladies on the beaches of Strand and Gordon’s Bay for two years now. Every time they “clean the beach” of pollution, all they do is fill their plastic bags with sand and stones.
In Strand recently from my beach house, I could count 24 big plastic bags lined up to be taken off by the trucks as “rubbish” and a further 16 bags a short walk away – I went down and looked inside. Shells, sand and pebbles.
The sand levels of our coastal beaches are receding. And now I can see why.
Weekly, perhaps tons of sand and shells are being raked up and carted away by refuse trucks. This is costing the municipality big money, I am sure.
What can a person do to intervene or take this further? This issue is economic and environmental.
