The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) proudly announces the commendable performance of university students, at two prestigious international and national mathematics competitions.
In August, the 30th International Mathematics Competition (IMC) for University Students was held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, with spirited participation from a SAMF team, selected based on students’ performance in the 2023 Standard Bank South African Tertiary Mathematics Olympiad (SATMO).
Benjamin Kleyn, Jean Weight, Danielle Kleyn, and Kerry Porrill (all students from Stellenbosch University) showcased their mathematical talents, securing impressive positions among global competitors.
Benjamin Kleyn achieved a remarkable 48 points, placing 136th and earning a second prize.
Danielle Kleyn and Jean Weight both scored 41 points, placing 196th and earning third prize.
Kerry Porrill earned an Honorable Mention with 31 points, ranking 268th. The SAMF team ranked 42nd out of 78 teams worldwide.
St Petersburg State University took first place, followed by the University of Bonn in second and the Jagiellonian University in third.
In addition to the IMC, the 2024 SATMO unfolded mid-August across 14 universities nationwide, attracting 350 university students.
Stellenbosch University emerged as the top-performing institution, with siblings Benjamin and Danielle Kleyn (esteemed alumni of the Old Mutual South African Mathematics Olympiad for high school learners and the International Mathematics Olympiad) distinguishing themselves as the Best Undergraduate and Best Honours Student, respectively.
“We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements at both the IMC and the SATMO,” said Professor Kerstin Jordaan, Executive Director at SAMF and full-time mathematics researcher.
“Their dedication and talent underscore the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to the development of mathematical talent and advocacy,” added Professor Jordaan.
