Growing up in Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape, baritone singer, director, composer and arranger Gavin Fullard, spent his evenings listening to the sounds of big bands such as the Glenn Miller orchestra, drifting from the old record player on the verandah of his family home.
This music, together with the influence of his sisters – both pianists – would be the catalyst to a career in the music industry spanning four decades.
Today the 83-year-old Fullard spends his days writing arrangements – “to mesmerise and de-light audiences” he says – for his vocal group Track Five.
The group, which was established in 1995, will be performing at the Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch on Saturday April 16, and will provide guests with a taste of their newly released CD, Love You Madly.
They will be joined by the Ramon Alexander Trio, Saxit and Engela Fullard on flutes.
While Fullard may be the only member left of the original Track Five group, he has been performing with fellow members Monique Hellenberg, Michelle van Zyl, and Arthur Pietersen for several years, with Amber Kruger recently joining the group.
Over the years, Track Five’s repertoire has included well-known jazz and contemporary songs as well as romantic ballads.
