The Liebrecht Gallery starts off its tenth anniversary year with a joint exhibition of recent works in oil by Jaco Coetzee from Somerset West and Weyers du Toit from Bredasdorp. Both artists paint from life, and the title To see the light refers, among other things, to the fact that they have limited “light time” available in a painting session to capture their subject matter on canvas before the painting loses its sense of immediacy and spontaneity. Coetzee paints in the open air and his body of work for this show consists of street scenes and landscapes in or near Muizenberg, Stellenbosch, Sutherland, Gordon’s Bay, Montagu, Aberdeen and Hermanus. To see the light is Coetzee’s sixth exhibition in the Liebrecht since his debut in 2010. With his still lives, Du Toit shows a playfulness in the choice of objects and an acute awareness of the effects of ambient light. This exhibition is his first one in the Liebrecht Gallery. The exhibition opens at the gallery, at 34 Oudehuis Street, Somerset West, on Thursday January 26, at 6.30pm. Call Avril Gardiner at 021 852 8030 or 082 682 5710 for more information.
