The Playhouse Theatre in Somerset West will see the first-time production of the one of the most successful musicals of all time: Cabaret, from Wednesday December 1 to Saturday December 10.
This multi-award winning musical features the songs Wilkommen, Don’t Tell Mama, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, Money and the title number, Cabaret – among others.
“More than just the entertainment of the ‘Kit Kat Klub’, this musical make serious comments about how people and love can be so easily affected by war and politics.
“No matter how much we try to ignore what is happening around us, we are all affected. Cabaret reflects the rise of Nazism in 1930s Berlin, but it remains just as relevant today as we see similar sentiments continue to thrive across the continents,” says Darryl Spijkers, director of this musical.
Mr Spijkers is the chairman of the Playhouse Theatre and regular director and theatre-maker at the theatre and for Parel Vallei High School.
The Playhouse presents this production with choreography by Sume Lotter-Christodoulou, to be staged with delicate attention to detail with set design by Zanodean Cassiem.
Cor Gardiner is the music director who will also be playing on stage as the live band feel is created for the show.
The story follows the journey of Cliff Bradshaw, an odd American author working on a novel in Berlin, who encounters Sally Bowles at the seedy Kit Kat Klub where she sings.
When she is fired by the club’s owner, also her jealous boyfriend, she moves in with Cliff and the two fall in love. As the Nazis begin taking control of the German government, the atmosphere of the Kit Kat Klub and the lives of Cliff and Sally begin to change dramatically.
The whole production is held together by the sensational Jordyn Linklater as the MC (or host) as he watches, mocks and comments on the action as it happens.
The story is about the Kit Kat Klub, but in true Brechtian style this presentation is distorted as audience members are drawn into the club as if the story is being played out for us to think about.
There is an age restriction of 16 on this show due to suggestive script and movement. Book at Computicket, and visit www.theplayhouse.org.za or follow regular upates on The Playhouse Somerset West on Facebook or Instagram.
