The Helderberg Village Music Society will be presenting a concert, Tchaikovsky’s Romances, performed by Albert Combrink, piano, Dr Annien Shaw, violin, and Beverley Chiat, soprano.
It will take place on Sunday June 23, at Talani Terrace, at 4pm.
Mr Combrink studied in Durban and Bloemfontein and is a multi-faceted musician working in a variety of genres: from solo classical, instrumental and vocal accompaniment, chamber music, musicals, opera, jazz and Tango, as well as composer and arranger.
He is known for his informative programme notes for the Cape Town Concert Series and pre-concert talks at the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s Symphony seasons. He is also a valued piano teacher.
Internationally he has performed at the Leipzig Gewandhaus and in Singapore, where he gave both classical and Tango recitals, and has a long time association with the Cape Town Tango Ensemble.
He has worked with the UCT Opera School and the award winning Isango Portabello Company.
He coaches for Cape Town Opera, and he has worked with some of South Africa’s top singers, including Pretty Yende and Pumeza Matshikeza, and international singers, including Lesley Garrett and Katherine Jenkins.
Dr Shaw is a soloist, chamber musician, baroque violinist and teacher based in Cape Town.
She holds a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of Cape Town, a PGDip and FRSM in solo performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester UK, and a Masters in Chamber Music from the University of Stellenbosch.
As a chamber musician she led the award-winning Stellenbosch University Postgraduate String Quartet on two international tours.
She has been actively involved in the developing Baroque scene in Cape Town as a member of the Cape Consort and a Guest Concert Master and soloist of the Camerata Tinta Barocca (CTB).
Dr Shaw has lectured at Rhodes University and University of Cape Town in repertoire studies, teaching methodology, chamber music, orchestral studies, violin and viola as subjects and is currently a part-time lecture at Stellenbosch University.
Ms Chiat is a Coloratura Soprano from Cape Town. She obtained her Performer’s Diploma in Opera from the UCT Opera School in 1995 as well as her Postgraduate Diploma in Opera from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK in 2000.
She has sung in opera, oratoria and has done concert work across South Africa and Africa. In 2008 she made her debut as Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute with the international company, De Nationale Reisopera which toured the Netherlands.
In 2018 she toured with the musical production Evita in the role of “Mamma” and in 2019 was cast as “Carlotta” in The Phantom of the Opera World Tour which ran until the end of 2020.
Ms Chiat is the main singing lecturer at Springfield Convent High School as well as United Herzlia School. In addition she runs her own private singing practice.
