The Interdisciplinary Forum for Popular Music (ifPOP) Jazz Conversations series is hosting a free jazz talk and performance by Nduduzo Makhathini on Thursday August 23, at 7pm, at the Konservatorium in Stellenbosch.
Top jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini is the winner of the 2018 South African Music Award (SAMA) for best jazz album, and the event is an opportunity to see him perform live.
The concert will start with Makhathini in conversation with Dr Stephanie Vos, of the Africa Open Institute, Stellenbosch University, about jazz as a collective process, spirituality and the legacy of the late virtuoso pianist Bheki Mseleku.
The talk will be followed by a performance, where Makhathini will be joined by a line-up consisting of Buddy Wells on saxophone, Shane Cooper on bass, and Jonno Sweetman on drums.
The Jazz Conversations series is organised by ifPOP at the Africa Open Institute, at Stellenbosch University.
The conversations are aimed at documenting the practices and approaches of the current generation of jazz musicians.
As public events that are free, another aim of the series is to create more inclusive social spaces in Stellenbosch through music performance.
For this event, ifPOP teams up with the Certificate Programme at the Music Department, where Makhathini will present a jazz masterclass for students of the certificate programme, on Friday August 24.
