There will be a flute and piano concert at the University of Stellenbosch’s Endler Hall, on Tuesday March 5, at 3pm, under the auspices of Woordfees 2019.
The principal flute of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Gabriele von Durckheim, and award-winning concert pianist Luis Magalhães, join forces to showcase their instruments at full potential.
While the piano repertoire utilises the instrument’s full capability, the flute repertoire, especially before 1850, tends to be lighter, as the instrument of the time was tuned differently, and had a much smaller dynamic range.
Improvements in the construction of the flute has created a more versatile instrument, and this programme selection displays the darker colours that the modern flute is capable of creating.
The piano in this programme has an equally prominent and soloistic role to play, as opposed to the accompanying role it often takes in the flute repertoire. The programme includes works by Bach, Schubert, Prokofiev, Jolivet and Fauré.
