The Afrikaanse Taalmonument is hosting a stargazing picnic on Paarl Mountain, on Saturday November 10, at 6pm.
The theme of the picnic is “Mars in sight” and after a guided tour of the monument at 6.30pm, picnic-goers can watch the stars – and Mars – from 8pm to 10.30pm with the aid of telescopes, under guidance of members of the Orion Observation Group.
Picnic-goers may bring their own picnic baskets, or order one – R300 for two people or R400 with a basket included – from Volksmond Coffee Shop on 021 863 2800.
Safe parking is available and entry is controlled. Bring binoculars and warm clothes. There are outdoor games and playgrounds for children.
The picnic is in aid of “Let’s Read!”, the Language Museum’s reading project for children. Picnic-goers are requested to bring a new or second-hand children’s book to donate to the project.
Entry costs R40 for adults and R10 for children. Tickets are available at Computicket or the gate.
Booking by calling 021 863 0543/4809 is essential so that enough telescopes can be catered for. Stargazing picnics will be cancelled due to bad weather.
Call 073 853 3100 or 083 544 6510 for weather inquiries.
