World Hospice Day takes place on Saturday October 14 this year, and will begin with a commemorative “Voices for Hospice” concert, on Sunday October 15, at the United Church, corner of Andries Pretorius and Bright streets, Somerset West, at 3pm.
Anita Glenister has once again convened an afternoon musical potpourri which offers an enjoyable variety of popular and classical music.
The highlight of the concert is the Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers (SMS), an a cappella vocal group of 12 members who have been performing since 2004.
Their repertoire includes a variety of music styles, although the focus is mainly on vocal Renaissance music, especially madrigals. The group exists thanks to Matildie Thom who, as a student, learned about the concept of madrigals during a music history lesson.
She approached a few friends about the idea to get together and make music purely for the social enjoyment of it, just like it was done centuries ago. SMS regularly performs at church services, weddings and social functions and are in great demand in the Western Cape.
They have also recorded Russian-Greek Orthodox liturgy in Afrikaans, a pioneering endeavour, which can also be purchased at the concert.
Tickets cost R85, and are available from Helderberg Hospice, 21 Old Stellenbosch Road, or the Hospice shops in Somerset West and Strand.
Tickets can also be bought at the door, however, RSVP for catering purposes and due to limited seating.
A high tea is included in the ticket price. Email cheryl@helderberghospice.org.za or call Celestine on 021 852 4608 or 076 062 5855.
