Rappers Big D and Libo G hope to spread awareness to people with their newly released single called Drugs.
Donovan “Big D” Petersen originally from Bredasdorp but now living in Strandfontein, contacted Leigh-Muir “Libo G” Booysen from Plettenberg Bay to work together on the song.
Although they were very far from each other they made it work.
“Our people face terrible hardships and we need to all band together to put an end to the suffering,” said Big D.
The beat was produced by Nate Dawg the Magician, a producer and beatmaker from Bredasdorp.
Libo-G (Life Is Better Obeying God) said his inspiration came from a situation involving his cousin. “In the time I was writing this song, my cousin was in jail for more than four years. I too was very naughty and was well on my way to make bad decisions but I saw what happened to my cousin and decided to change my life,” he said.
“Ek het geskryf oor die pandemie van dwelms in ons minder-bevoorregte gemeenskappe. My cousin who I was really close to fell into that trap. Ek persoonlik het ook n paar verkeerde dinge gedoen. Ek sommer vroeg besluit dat dit nie die way is nie – deur te leer uit ander mense se foute,” he said.
Big D wrote about a girl that lived a very hard life. She was abused at home and she started using drugs. No one reached out to help her and she passed away.
“Growing up in the small town of Bredasdorp, stories like this are very common. In my community poverty and drugs as well as alcohol abuse are the daily routine. I wish to bring a message of awareness and hope. I am trying to uplift myself through music,” said Big D.
“We hope that this song will make a difference in people’s lives and minds,” he added.
