The Endler Concert Series will feature a number of music events at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch.
The Stellenbosch University Jazz Band takes to the stage on Friday May 12 at 8pm. This concert features student vocalists, in pieces such as Straighten up and fly right, Mack the Knife, and Smoke gets in your eyes. The programme, entitled A South African Celebration, also features a celebration of South African jazz standards, and the compositions and arrangements of Mike Campbell and Darryl Andrews. The band will perform their arrangements of tunes such as Snoektown, Bra Ben, and Sugar Shake. For lovers of swing, there will be melodies such as Count Bubba.
Student vocalists Blain Josephs, Phillip Jordaan, Alex Baven, Kelsey Le Roux and Raefella Migliore, will feature along with Unity Mzi from UCT on drums. The band is conducted by Felicia Lesch. Tickets cost R50 and R30 for students and pensioners, and are available from Computicket and at the door.
Schola Cantorum, the academic chamber choir and resident choir of the Department of Music at Stellenbosch University will sing on Sunday May 14, at 4.30pm. The choir is lead by Martin Berger, former director of music at Würzburg Cathedral in Germany and professor at the Robert-Schumann- Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf.
This concert, entitled In Spiritu, is centred around sacred music for choir and organ, with Diederick Basson as organist.
The first half of the programme features Arvo Pärt’s Berliner Messe.
Movements take many forms flowing from quietly reverent duets between parts to full chorus proclamations of faith.
Also on the programme are Gardiner Evening Hymn; Monteverdi Hymnus: Ave maris stella; Gjeilo Ubi caritas; Duruflé Ubi caritas et Amor; Grieg Ave maris stella; Vierne Messe solenelle (Sanctus / Benedictus / Agnus Dei) and Parry I was glad.
The Beethoven String Quartet project will perform on Friday May 19, at 8pm.
The quartet, consisting of of David Juritz (first violin), Suzanne Martens (second violin), Karin Gaertner (viola) and Peter Martens (cello) will perform all of the Beethoven String Quartets: Op. 18, no. 1; Op. 135 and Op. 59, no 3.
Tickets cost R140 and R100 for students and pensioners, and are available now through Computicket and at the door.
