Cape Town Baroque Festival

The Cape Town Baroque Festival (CTBF), presented by baroque music ensemble, Camerata Tinta Berocca (CTB), takes place from Friday September 21 to Sunday September 23. The CTBF will stage eight events which will feature works by 17th and 18th century composers.

The festival opens on Friday September 21, at 8pm, with “Glorious Baroque”, a concert featuring Vivaldi’s popular Gloria (RV 589), at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in De Waterkant.

Carin van Heerden, head of the Institute for Early Music and Performance Practice at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz, Austria, will present master classes to young upcoming local recorder players on Saturday September 22, from 11am until 2pm, at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Heritage architect John Rennie will present a two-hour long walking tour of the historic UCT Hiddingh Campus in Orange Street, on Saturday September 22, at 1.30pm.

The Alexander Bar in Strand Street will host a concert on Saturday September 22, at 4pm, featuring the music of David Bowie, arranged and reimagined as baroque compositions by Stellenbosch-based composer, Jan-Hendrik Harley. This concert will be repeated on Sunday September 23, at 9pm.

On Saturday September 22, at 8pm, CBTF will collaborate with the Cape Town Concert Series for a performance by members of CTB and the Durban-based Baroque2000, as well as Van Heerden in the Baxter Concert Hall in Rondebosch.

The programme will consist of chamber music from the 18th century composers Schaffrath, Vivaldi, Hook and Telemann.

Mario Nell and Winand Grundling will present an all-Mozart duo recital programme on the organ at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, on Sunday September 23, at 12.30pm.

A concert titled “Mixed Doubles – 17th-century pop songs for two voices and plucked strings” will take place on Sunday September 23, at 4pm, at the South African Slave Church Museum in Long Street, featuring works by Marì* , Mudarra, Kapsperger and Caccini.
