One of the most wonderful characteristics of pinotage, is its versatility – and this is clearly visible in the wines paired with the different Joubert and Monty meat products, says Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof, one of South Africa’s best-known pinotage producers.
On Saturday and Sunday April 16 and 17, the annual Biltong and Pinotage Festival takes place at L’Avenir Estate near Stellenbosch, and gates open at 11am.
Taste 18 selected Pinotage’s ranging from red to white, rosé to sparkling, and even semi-sweet and dessert wines, all paired with nine different biltong flavours, droëwors or salami.
Try Spicy BBQ with Altydgedacht and Remhoogte’s pinotage, or go all out with the “coffee” pinotages from Boland Cellar and Diemersfontein paired with smokey sweet chilli – or pepperoni salami and Mellasat’s white pinotage or Perdeberg sparkling rosé.
The event is family-friendly with live music, food trucks, light meals and casual seating under the trees next to the dam or on the lawns in front of the cellar.
The 18 participating wineries are: Altydgedacht, Anura Vineyards, Badsberg Wine Cellar, Beyerskloof Wines, Boland Cellar, Chamonix, Diemersdal Wine Estate, Diemersfontein Wines, Flagstone Winery, Kaapzicht Estate, Lanzerac Wine Estate, L’Avenir Wines, Mellasat Vineyards, Perdeberg Wines, Remhoogte Wine Estate, Rhebokskloof, Rijk’s Private Cellar, and Tulbagh Winery.
