There’s no people like show people… from the team that gave you The Wizard of Oz and Shrek the musical, comes the musical Annie Get Your Gun, an old-fashioned musical,
Annie Oakley (Nicoline Murray) is a poor yet spirited and happy sharp-shooting country girl, who becomes the star of Buffalo Bill`s Wild West Show.
Here she meets and falls in love with expert rifleman Frank Butler (Rory Eliot).
Tough, outspoken, rough and tumble Annie is not Frank`s idea of what a wife should be, and the two remain at competitive odds.
This fictionalised version of the life of real-life sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her romance with Frank Butler boasts a score of Irving Berlin gems including There`s No Business Like Show Business, I Got the Sun in the Mornin, Anything You Can Do and many more.
Darryl Spijkers, who directed The Diary of Anne Frank, Shrek the Musical and Blood Brothers, directs this timeless piece calling it “the founding female musical”.
He adds: “To think that in the 1940s the original production saw over 1 000 Broadway performances. It is no wonder why this gem rests firmly in the history books.
“And yet its wit, melodies and powerful messages aew still hugely relevant and enjoyable today.”
The show runs at the Playhouse Theatre in Somerset until Saturday December 15. Book at Computicket.
