Poinsettia Park holds a cherished position in the hearts of our local community, with its maintenance relying significantly on community efforts. As part of our ongoing fundraising initiatives for the park’s upkeep, the second Art in the Park event was held on Saturday March 2, 2024, featuring a unique mini paste-up festival.
The mini paste-up festival introduced an innovative and exhilarating dimension to our event, showcasing street art in a democratic and community-driven manner.
Paste-ups provided a platform for artists, both local and international, to express their creativity free from the conventional constraints of the art world.
This festival marked a groundbreaking moment in South Africa, with visually stunning designs affixed to special boards at the Art in Poinsettia Park exhibition.
The event drew a substantial crowd, with over 15 local artists exhibiting and 16 international paste-up artists participating virtually.
Their artwork was printed locally from files emailed to the organisers, sparking a flurry of sharing and support on Instagram. Slices of the completed paste-up boards, along with a set of six paintings generously donated by Stephan Cronje, were available as raffle prizes.
Additionally, a special commemorative t-shirt design featuring many of the international paste-up pieces was made available for free download, with prints already circulating locally and abroad.
The motivation behind launching the Art in Poinsettia Park exhibition was twofold: to offer a cost-effective outlet for artists and to promote street art while simultaneously raising funds for the park’s upkeep.
waiving participation fees, we ensured that art could be offered at affordable prices without burdening the artists. The Park’s volunteer steering committee raised funds through various means, including running a food stall, offering tractor rides on a vintage Ferguson (known as Vaaljapie), and selling raffle tickets.
Proceeds from these efforts will be allocated towards fuel and expenses for maintaining the park’s vast grounds, as well as its ongoing improvement as a public asset.
The event was further enriched by a captivating performance from Parel Vallei High School’s Big Band, as well as opportunities for attendees to engage in a drumming circle and savour great coffee.
The caliber of attending artists was exceptional, with many contributing their own paste-up pieces. It’s a testament to the inclusivity of the event that even individuals like a dear lady on the east side of 80-years-old participated as both an artist and a paster.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the businesses and individuals who generously contributed to the success of the Art in Poinsettia Park event:
